Have you seen anti-graffiti coating marketed out there, but aren’t sure what it is and if it’s right for your business? Let’s dive into the details so that you can make an informed decision.
What Is Anti-Graffiti Coating?
As the name suggests, anti-graffiti coating works by creating a protective barrier between the surface you’re trying to protect and a potential graffiti tag. Known as a sacrificial product, when you remove the graffiti, you also remove the coating with it.
Its permeability allows the surface to breathe without allowing graffiti to penetrate the surface below.
Additionally the coating is a biodegradable product with minimal odor, and when dry, it offers a matte, virtually invisible finish.
This coating is suitable for heritage buildings, as well as porous and non-porous substrates.
A Deep Look At The How It Works
With a lifespan of around 7 years (potentially up to 10), the anti-graffiti coating allows tags to be washed off using a hot water power washer. However, the manufacturer still recommends use of their chemicals for quick removal. If you do not have a hot water power washer or a stubborn tag there is the potential that you may still need to pay a removal service to come take care of the graffiti.
Furthermore, because it is sacrificial in nature, once a tag is removed, the anti-graffiti coating will need to be reapplied to that area. It can be reapplied immediately to a damp but not wet surface.
How Much Does It Cost?
One of the major points to weigh when considering anti-graffiti coating is the cost.
As a rough estimate, a graffiti removal company may charge anywhere from $8-10 (or more) a square foot for labour. From our supplier, the product itself covers around 500 sq ft per gallon and multiple coats are recommended for maximum efficacy.
Depending on the area you’re aiming to cover, you will need multiple gallons which should also be taken into consideration.
Additionally, factors such as accessibility will also come into play as special equipment, additional staff to manage traffic, etc. may increase the price.
Where We’d Recommend Anti-Graffiti Coating Applications
We’d recommend it for mural installations, heritage buildings, monuments or other delicate surfaces where removal may damage the underlying surface.
It is also great for bridges and other infrastructure projects made from precast concrete as that is a more difficult surface to remove from.
In Summary
Anti-graffiti coating isn’t for everyone. As noted above, there are certainly applications where it is beneficial and warranted, but if you have a surface that is easier to remove from and doesn’t get tagged frequently, simply paying for removal as needed may be more cost effective in the long run.
